Kingsport - Kiwanis International

The first Kiwanis Club was chartered on January 21, 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. Today, the Kiwanis family has grown to number almost 16,000 clubs and over 600,000 men, women and youth in more than 80 countries and geographic areas. Kiwanis Clubs sponsor community service projects and raise funds to pay for these projects.

The Kiwanis family of clubs around the world have invested more than $100 million in their communities with a special emphasis on meeting the needs of young children. Kiwanis members have also volunteered more than 6 million hours toward their service activities.

Kiwanis International’s continuing service emphasis is “Young Children: Priority One.” Under this theme, each Kiwanis Club is encouraged to sponsor significant projects that serve the special needs of young children from prenatal development to age 5. In a typical year, “Young Children: Priority One” service projects involve more than $14 million and 1 million volunteer hours.

The Kingsport Kiwanis Club

The Kingsport Kiwanis Club was chartered by Kiwanis International on January 29, 1924. Current and past local Kiwanis service projects have included:

Collecting coats, shoes, and socks for local impoverished children.
Supporting scholastic excellence at local elementary schools via a reading partnership and student awards.
Support for the Darrell's Dream Boundless Playground at Warriors Path State Park.
Participation in worldwide Kiwanis service projects in partnership with UNICEF to elimiate iodine deficency dissorders and maternal/neonatal tetanus.
Assisting the salvation army with its annual bell-ringing.
Support for the elderly residents of the Kiwanis Towers.
Encouraging local civic activism via forums for candidates persuing elections for the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman as well as the Kingsport School Board.
